Postoperative Swelling in Plastic Surgery: What You Need to Know

Expert Opinion from Dr. Yily De Los Santos

Postoperative swelling is a natural response of the body after plastic surgery. Many patients worry when they see swelling in the treated areas, but understanding this process is key to a successful recovery.

Why does swelling occur after plastic surgery?

According to Dr. Yily De Los Santos, an aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgeon from the Dominican Republic, swelling is part of the healing process. “When we perform procedures like blepharoplasty, BBL (Brazilian Butt Lift), or breast augmentation, the body reacts by sending more blood and fluids to the treated area to repair it. This causes swelling, but it’s a sign that the body is working correctly,” explains Dr. De Los Santos.

How long does postoperative swelling last?

The recovery time varies depending on the procedure and individual patient characteristics. “In an eyelid surgery, swelling usually decreases within two weeks, while in a BBL or breast augmentation, it can last from four to six weeks. However, final results may take months to fully develop,” says Dr. Yily De Los Santos.

Tips to Reduce Swelling After Plastic Surgery

1. Follow your surgeon’s instructions: Adhering to postoperative care is crucial for a faster and safer recovery.

2. Wear compression garments: In procedures like BBL and liposuction, compression garments help control swelling and enhance results.

3. Lymphatic drainage massages: Postoperative massages can accelerate swelling reduction and prevent fluid retention.

4. Avoid sodium and maintain a balanced diet: A protein-rich, low-sodium diet contributes to better recovery.

5. Gentle movement and controlled mobility: Walking lightly improves circulation and reduces the risk of complications.

When Should You Worry About Postoperative Swelling?

While swelling is normal, if you notice extreme redness, fever, or intense pain, you should contact your surgeon immediately. “Constant monitoring is essential to prevent complications and ensure the best results,” emphasizes Dr. Yily De Los Santos.
